Since 1900, Marolin has handcrafted figurines and Christmas decorations in the small town of Steinach, in Germany's Thuringian Forest. Founder Richard Mahr was a trained figure painter, and his family business soon became known across Europe. It survived a factory fire, World War II and decades of state control in East Germany. After German reunification in 1990, the family brought Marolin back to life.
Then came a lucky find: the company's original papier-mache recipe, handwritten in chalk behind a cellar door that had stayed shut for years. Today Marolin is still owned and run by the founding family, led by Richard Mahr's granddaughter, Evelyn Forkel. A small team of skilled artisans still casts and hand-paints every piece using Richard Mahr's original methods and moulds. Each piece is a real heirloom of German folk art.
