Christmas Tree Ornament Sizes

Picture this - You are finally moving out of your tiny apartment and into your first house. This year you decide you want to celebrate Christmas in style with a big lavish Christmas tree. In your apartment you usually have a small 3-4 foot Christmas tree and now finally have the space for a full size 8 foot beauty. You get the tree all set up and pull out the decorations only to realize that it looks like someone took a shrink ray to the ornaments on that large tree.

How do you know what size ornaments you need for your tree? Well, grab a cup of cocoa, get cozy, and get ready to have some fun planning your Christmas tree.

What kinds of ornaments are available?

While there are millions of different Christmas tree ornaments on the market, they all tend to fall into one of three categories - Balls, Finials, and Figurals. Each ornament brings a little something different to the aesthetic and feel of your tree. Use just one type of ornament or a combination of ornaments to create dimension texture throughout your tree. Christmas ornaments come in all shapes and sizes giving variety and versatility for every decor theme.

There is no specific size an ornament needs to be, but most generally range from 1 - 4 inches. Since decorating your Christmas tree is a personal decor choice, there is no right or wrong ornament to choose for your tree, but the general rule applies that the larger the tree, the larger the ornaments should be.

When selecting where to place your ornaments on the tree try to keep the larger ornaments towards the bottom and fuller parts of the tree and the smaller ornaments toward the narrow top of the tree.

Ball Ornaments

Ball ornaments also known as bauble oranemnts are probably the most well known ornaments and are exactly what they sound like - round ball ornaments. These ball ornaments can come in a variety of materials, sizes, colors, and designs. Using ball ornaments sporadically throughout your tree fills in space and allows you to bring in complimentary colors and textures. Ball ornaments can be typically found with diameters ranging from 1 inch - 12 inches and can be used in multiple uses.

Ornaments with a diameter under 2 inches are the perfect size for trees under 4 feet, ornaments ranging from 1.5 - 6 inches are perfect for trees between 5-8 feet, ornaments with a diameter of 7 inches and up are more suited for trees 9 feet and taller. If using multiple sized ornaments on the same tree add the larger ornaments towards the bottom or fuller sections of your tree.

Take the stress out of decorating by creating a capsule collection of different colored and sized ornaments giving you a base of ornaments for any theme you choose.

Finial Ornaments

Finials first came on to the Christmas scene in the 19th Century when German glass makers began making finial tree toppers that resembled glass exclamation points. Finial soon became a popular tree topper and then an even more popular ornament. Finial ornaments range in size from 6 inches to about 16 inches long and feature a combination of various shaped bulbs and tapered points.

The more tapered the finial is, the more elegant it is considered. For trees 6-8 feet it is recommended to use finials that range between 6-10 inches depending on how full the tree is.

If you are someone with a tree that is 9 feet or taller try using finials that are more in the 8-16 inch range.

Figural Ornaments

The third type of Christmas ornament popularly seen on trees are figural ornaments. Figural ornaments come in a variety of shapes and can be almost anything. From ornaments shaped like snowflakes, to birds, to cars, to Santa.

The figural ornaments you choose to put on your tree is a wonderful way to express your personality. Figural ornaments can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with most ornaments averaging between 3-5 inches.

Minature Ornaments

Mini ornaments are tiny Christmas ornaments designed specifically for Christmas trees that are 2 - 3 feet tall. These mini ornaments generally range in size from 1 - 1.5 inches and may be small in size, but are overflowing with holiday cheer.

Take your office tabletop tree from drab to fab with an assortment of miniature ornaments.

Christmas Ornament Size Chart

People always ask how many ornaments they need to use or how many lights they need, but it is really about personal preference and the specific tree. The general recommendation is using 10-15 standard size ornaments per foot for trees under 9 feet tall and for trees over 9 feet tall using 12-20 ornaments per foot.

The overall amount of ornaments needed for your tree will depend on if you decorate the entire tree or just the front half of it, if you prefer a fully decorated tree or sparsely decorated tree, and the size of your ornaments.
