After WW2, stories about superheroes began to see a decline, but during The Silver Age of comics (1956 - circa 1970) superheroes claimed new fame after DC comics decided to reimagine their stories from the ground up.
Making his first appearance in Showcase #22 (Oct 1959), Hal Jordan is a fighter pilot, member of the intergalactic police force (The Green Lantern Corps), and founding member of The Justice League of America. As a member of The Green Lantern Corps Hal is responsible for protecting Sector 2814 where Earth resides. Hal was chosen to replace dying alien, Abin Sur in The Green Lantern Corps because he was "utterly honest and born without fear." His green lantern battery, in combination with his ring give Hal the superpowers necessary for keeping Earth safe.
